Spring and Autumn
September and March are my favorite months in the calendar. The first day of Autumn is September 23rd this year. Fall and Spring are marked on the astronomical calendar when the sun crosses the equator as the Earth wobbles so the exact moment of the beginning of Autumn this year is 2:50 AM in our time zone. The day and night are the same length on the first day of Spring and Fall, hence, equinox.
September 1st is the first day of the Meteorological Calendar. Much less exact, simply dividing the 12 months into 4 seasons. Fall starts warm and by the end of the month has wonderfully moderate weather and that is good enough for the weather folks.
Either calendar finds the start of “Fall” in September.
Christians are oriented to the calendar of the Christian year in harmony with the movement of the Earth and Sun along with the weather changing.
September is “ordinary time” the season after Pentecost and before Advent. Not remarkable compared to Easter and Christmas celebrations, but important, the longest season in the Christian year. I will be preaching from Luke’s Gospel in this month of “ordinary time”
The texts are…Luke 14:1, 7-14 on the 1st, Luke 14:25-33 on the 8th, Luke 15:1-10 on the 15th, Luke 16:1-13 on the 22nd and Luke 16:19-31 on the 29th. 5 Sundays. They lead us through an extraordinary month.
Be prayerful with me as we celebrate the harmony of God’s creation with our considering the Good News of Salvation. Anticipate with joy all the ways September 2019 will be transformative in your life and in our church.
Peace and Grace, BRENT
