The Pastor's Corner - April 2021

The Vision Newsletter: Notes from the Pastor's Desk

My prayer this Easter is that as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a renewal will be sparked in our church and in the community where we are citizens.

I believe we are weary after this many months of trying to discern truth day to day about our situation. So, this Easter, I turn my focus to the witness of Easter in Scripture. I am determined to shape my spiritual life on the bedrock of Scripture, and in the seasons of Easter, Pentecost, and Ordinary Time that remain in the Christian Year, I will read again and again the witness of Jesus as my risen Lord. I am going to connect these passages of Scripture to every text I preach for the rest of this year. I invite you to do the same, not with the focus I may have on offering a message from the pulpit, but with an understanding, every day, that the Risen Christ is the beginning and end of your day, your life journey, and your eternal life.

·        “As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. ‘Do not be alarmed,’ he said. ‘You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples…’”  ~ Mark 16:5-7

·        “He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.’” ~ Luke 24:6-7

·        “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.”   ~ Matthew 28:6

·        “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live,’” ~ John 11:25

·        “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.” ~ 1 Corinthians 6:14

·        “We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in the newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.”  ~ Romans 6:4-5

·         “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise Him up on the last day.”

~ John 6:40

·        “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:14

·        “If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."  ~ Romans 8:11

·        “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth…” ~ Job 19:25

·        “That you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” ~ Ephesians 1:18-21

·        “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,” ~ Philippians 3:10

·        “He was buried, and He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.”  ~ 1 Corinthians 15:4

·        “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” ~ 1 Peter 1:3-4

·        “And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” ~ Acts 4:33

·        “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has mastery on Him. The death He died, He died to sin once and for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” ~ Romans 6:8-11

·        “And Jesus Christ our Lord was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised Him from the dead by means of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 1:4

·        “Christ Jesus is the one who died – more than that, who was raised – who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” ~ Romans 8:34

·        “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces.”   ~ Isaiah 25:8

·        “For as by a man came death, by a man has come the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:21-22

·        “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.” ~ Romans 6:9

·        “He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” ~ Romans 4:25

·        “Having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through your faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”

~ Colossians 2:12

·        “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” ~ Romans 10:9

As your Pastor, I pray with you and for you. All of our work together at Somerville First United Methodist Church will be blessed if we all walk with the risen Jesus!

Peace and Grace,
