Rev. Brent Porterfield has served in a variety of church leadership roles in the local church, in higher education ministries, international missions and social agency administration. “I am very excited to be a part of the work of the United Methodist Church in these challenging times,” Porterfield said, “the Methodists in Somerville have led in the spiritual life of Fayette County for nearly 200 years. We are a vibrant community of faith with worship and service opportunities for all ages. My wife Melissa and I feel blessed in our welcome to Somerville and look forward to being active citizens in the community.”
Somerville First United Methodist Church meets for worship at 8:30 on Sunday mornings for a casual praise service and at 10:55 in the historic sanctuary for a traditional celebration. The Youth and Children of the church meet on Wednesday evenings and all ages gather for Sunday School after the early service at 9:30. Join Us.
Lindsay Dunn is a passionate follower of Jesus Christ who has 8 years of experience in student ministry. She loves seeking out and using innovative ways to reach students, families, and the local community.
Alice Holden is one of Somerville UMC's very best treasures! She has been with us in the nursery for 15 years and is one of the most friendly, nurturing, and energetic people you will meet.
Nancy Yager Smith enriches the worship experience and spiritual growth of Somerville First United Methodist Church. A native Tennessean, Nancy has sung in church choirs since she was 12. She is a graduate of the University of Memphis, and teaches middle-school history. She and her husband Jim have two children, two grand-dogs, and a sweet grand-baby.
Sarah Belle Day has accompanied worship at Somerville First since junior high school. Initially playing both organ and piano, Sarah Belle accompanies the traditional service by playing congregational hymns and inspiring offertories. After graduating from Fayette County High School, Sarah Belle earned a BA in Music and English from Lambuth College and an MEd from the University of Memphis. She taught in the Fayette County public school system for 8 years and has taught at Fayette Academy for 47 years.
